Doyle hits a hat-trick in Bosco derby win
19 October 2005
Shamrocks 2-2 Bosco 4-4:

NEWRY Bosco U11 team travelled the short distance across the city to take on neighbours Shamrocks in the opening fixture of the South Down U11 League. Fielding ten of their under-12 championship winning team, the Bosco would have been quite confident of a victory.

And so it proved to be but not after a great fight by the home team. Bosco made all the early running and the teamwork built up over the last four years among this group of players was evident.

Tricky corner-forward Rory Shields opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well-taken point. However, despite dominating the possession and territorial stats Bosco failed to add to this score and it was Shamrocks who took the lead with a point and goal.

In a very low scoring but exciting first half Rory Shields again popped up to score Bosco’s second point.

Both teams tried hard to add to their scores but thanks to two great saves by Bosco’s new goalkeeper Martin Marron and four point-blank misses by Bosco’s full-forward line the scores remained the same at the break: Shamrocks 1-1 Bosco 0-2.

Two minutes into the second half Bosco’s management made their first substitution and within a minute it had paid dividends when Barney Doyle fisted a high ball to the net.

Three minutes later he repeated the dose and Bosco were double scores ahead. By the ninth minute Bosco had added two further points from Kevin Morgan and Ryan Collins while Shamrocks added a point to maintain Bosco’s lead at double scores.

Bosco’s midfield of Ryan Collins and Damian McKeown were dominating proceedings and this combination, in tandem with David Hughes (another second half substitute), set up Barney Doyle’s hat-trick goal, which the young lad took expertly.

A fourth goal from wing half-back Conor Boyle in the 17th minute ended Bosco’s scoring while Shamrocks scored a consolation goal in the final minute. Bosco’s management can be satisfied with this opening performance of the league.

Their young charges played exceptionally well in patches and the new boys (recently promoted from the under -10 team) stood out. Martin Marron had an excellent game in goals and he will improve with more competitive games and training over the winter months.

Aaron Beattie had a magnificent game at full back, ably assisted by corner backs Rory McLoughlin and Feargal Lavery. The half-back line of Conor Boyle, Conal Gallagher and John McKevitt played well throughout. Midfielders Ryan Collins and Damian McKeown, the latter playing his first game at midfield, were in control for most of the match.

Half-forwards Kevin Morgan, Jonathon O’Hare and Ruairi O’Loughlin, and second half substitute David Hughes, all played their part in their team’s victory. The full-forward line of Ryan Byrne, Tiernan McKeown and Rory Shields improved as the game went on.

And the introduction of corner-forward Barney Doyle changed the course of the game. In the second game of the morning Bosco were able to field the remaining players of their thirty-three strong panel.

In this game all players put down a marker for future selection especially the Daly brothers, the Lonergan twins and PC Lennon. With several more players yet to return from injury there is going to be fierce competition for places in this Bosco team.
