THREE young writers from Kilkeel Primary School have been recognised for their talents in Royal Mail's Young Letter Writers competition. Callum Quinn and Ryan Wilson achieved highly commended and commended awards in the 6-8 year olds category, while Danielle Jeffrey received a special commendation.
Pupils aged between 7-11 were asked to write a 'First Class' letter. Callum Quinn wrote a letter to Mable the cat, thanking her for allowing her kitten to be adopted. In his entry, Ryan Wilson thanked footballer Frank Lampard for some special training he received when they met on holiday. It read: "You showed me some great football skills - dribbling, passing and heading.
I can now do 14 'keepie-uppies' thanks to you." Callum won £25 worth of book tokens and Ryan was awarded £15 worth of book tokens. Danielle Jeffrey's touching letter to the mother of an organ donor made such an impact on the judges that they created a special commendation award for her and a prize of over £100 worth of book tokens. Writing to the mother of the donor who helped Danielle's own mother, an extract reads:
"I wrote to thank you, because without your beloved daughter being a donor, we wouldn't have our mum with us today. "We are so sad for you losing your daughter, who was also a mum to two girls, whom we think of often. Now Mum lives life to the full and we cherish every minute."
