Clean sweep at loo awards
19 December 2007
NEWRY and Mourne District Council is flush with success having achieved three five-star, nine four-star and a three star award at the 2007 Loo of the Year awards. Technical and Environmental committee chairman Isaac Hanna and Cleansing officer Des Brady travelled to Birmingham to claim their throne and collect the awards.

Councillor Hanna was "delighted" to accept the awards adding that the money invested in toilet provision in the last five years was pennies well spent and placed Newry in the premier league. Director of Technical and Leisure Services Jim McCorry said his department recognised the importance of clean toilet facilities and congratulated staff on their efforts.

Judges from the British Toilet Association based their decision on a wide range of criteria including decor, fixtures and fittings and overall cleanliness with each loo receiving a star grading ranging from one to five Crossmaglen, Bagenal's Castle and Annalong came tops after they all received five star awards.

Mayor Michael Cole said that high standards of public toilet provision were expected by the public and council staff were to be commended for their consistent performance.

The mayor added that he was glad to see work progressing with a further toilet upgrade currently underway at Bridge Street, Kilkeel, scheduled to open in March 2008 replacing the original facility which was heavily vandalised
