Rockview Utd 4 Shanro Santos 2 (aet) ROCKVIEW United stay on course for a remarkable treble. It might be nigh on impossible but the team bossed by DC Campbell and Mickey O’Hanlon are hell bent on giving this unique trio of trophies a real bash. Imagine the Democrat Super League, the Mid-Ulster Shield and the Irish Junior Cup residing in Courtneys for a year.
United moved a step closer to their target as they took on and defeated a powerful Shanro Santos side at Jennings Park on Saturday afternoon. Though they did need extra time to do it.
Rockview, heading the Democrat Super League and one of only two teams from the Carnbane League still in the Junior Cup, opened the scoring in this Mid-Ulster Shield fourth round tie.
On 27 minutes Gavin Foy crossed accurately from the right with the big bustling striker Robbie McLoughlin sticking out a boot and nicking the ball into the Shanro net from five yards. The Forkhill side however, inspired by Steve McDonnell, battled back and Armagh’s All Ireland winner tested Dusty O’Hagan with a low drive. Rockview led at the break by that lone McLoughlin goal but early in the second half Shanro levelled and did so with an awesome strike.
Kevin McDonnell, with his back to goal, somehow swivelled before lashing a fearsome drive into the top corner. And when Philip McEvoy headed Santos in front, United looked in grave danger of exiting the Shield.
But with 15 minutes left the skilful Stephen McCabe got on the end of another Foy cross to shoot past Ryan McKinley.
